They Had the Customers. They Needed a Smarter Way to Reach Them.
The retailer had years of customer and purchase data, but its email marketing wasn’t fully using that information.
Broad newsletters treated every customer the same. Someone who regularly purchased food received the same message as someone who hadn’t visited in months. Promotions could generate sales, but the business couldn’t clearly see which purchases the emails influenced or which customer groups responded best.
The opportunity wasn’t simply to send more emails. It was to send more relevant emails and measure what happened afterward.
Where We Started
Make Every Email More Relevant and Measurable
We used customer purchase history to build more focused campaigns, bring inactive customers back, and connect email engagement with in-store sales.
The Strategy
Segment Customers by Purchase History
Build audiences around what customers purchased, how recently they visited and which products were most relevant to them.
Send More Focused Campaigns
Replace one-size-fits-all promotions with emails built around specific brands, products and customer behaviors.
Connect Emails With In-Store Sales
Compare recipient activity with transaction data to identify matching product and brand sales.
$19,477 in Sales Matched to Email Recipients
During June 2026, targeted email campaigns were matched with $19,477 in retail revenue from 265 customers across 328 orders.
Not every matching purchase was necessarily caused by an email. Some recipients may have shopped regardless. To avoid overstating the result, the reporting model conservatively estimated that $2,377 represented additional revenue influenced by the campaigns.
This gave the retailer two useful views of performance:
$19,477 in matching revenue
All qualifying purchases made by email recipients.$2,377 in estimated incremental revenue

Bringing Inactive Customers Back Into the Store
A win-back automation launched in May to reconnect with approximately 900 customers who had stopped shopping with the retailer.
Nearly half opened the emails, and just over 10% returned to make an in-store purchase. Those customers completed 97 orders and generated $4,766 in recovered revenue.
The immediate revenue mattered, but so did the renewed customer relationships. Every returning customer created another opportunity for future purchases beyond the initial win-back order.

How We Measure the Results
Matching revenue includes qualifying purchases made by campaign recipients during the measurement window. It shows how much those customers spent, but it does not assume that every purchase happened because of an email.
Incremental revenue is a more conservative estimate of purchases influenced by the campaign above what recipients were expected to purchase without it.
Win-back results track previously inactive customers who received the automation and later completed an in-store purchase. The June campaign and win-back figures are reported separately because their audiences and measurement windows may overlap. We do not add them together as one combined revenue claim.
That final sentence is important. It prevents someone from adding $19,477 and $4,766 and assuming the emails produced $24,243 in unique revenue.
